After dealing Michael Hutchinson the other day, the Florida Panthers weren’t content with where they were at, continuing to work the phones.
On Sunday, Dec. 30th, it was announced that the Florida Panthers have shipped defenseman Alex Petrovic to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Chris Wideman and a 2019 third-round draft pick.
Alex Petrovic, who’s currently 26 years of age, was originally drafted by the Panthers back in 2010 36th overall (2nd round). During his time with the Cats, the Edmonton-Alberta native put up 5G, 44A, and 49 points in a grand total of 254 games in Florida.
This season, he’s featured in 26 games and has tallied a mere one assist. His most memorable moment would have to date back to the 2016 NHL playoffs where he recorded the game-winning goal in Game #4 against the New York Islanders.
Heading out west to play for the Oilers, Petrovic will now have the chance to play for his hometown team, donning the blue and orange.
Coming to Florida in the other part of the deal, right-handed defenseman Chris Wideman takes part in his second trade of the season.
Originally, Wideman was traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2020 conditional sixth-round draft pick. Now, he heads to South Florida where he will play for his third NHL team.
Wideman, an American who is 28-years-old, played in 175 games for the Senators, tallying 16G, 27A, and 43 points altogether. His time in Edmonton was short-lived as he only participated in 5 games, recording 2 assists in result.
The other piece heading down south is a conditional 2019 third-round draft selection. Because Edmonton owns two third-round draft picks in the 2019 NHL Draft, the Panthers will get the better of the two.
Both players in this deal are UFAs at the end of the season, which gives either team the chance to walk away from their acquired player if they aren’t directly happy with their performance.
The third-round draft pick is arguably the most important piece in this trade. The Panthers stock up on a decent pick, which adds to their selection cupboard.
We wish Alex Petrovic the very best on his new team and we thank him for his commitment with the Florida Panthers for the last seven years!
