Panthers see growth in goalie of the future Samuel Montembeault – The Athletic

When Samuel Montembeault arrived at Florida Panthers development camp in June, he found his locker assignment exciting and a little intimidating.

The Panthers’ heir apparent to the crease found his gear next to the stall of childhood idol Roberto Luongo.

“I think it’s more inspiring,” Montembeault said. “Every year when I come here for training camp, they always pair me with him.”

Consider it the first glimpse into a goaltending transition for the Panthers.

In 2015, the Panthers began the long-term project to develop Luongo’s successor by drafting Montembeault with a third-round pick. The Panthers also selected Ryan Bednard in the seventh round.

Almost four years into the process, Montembeault’s status within the organization continues to rise. It has required time, patience and discipline against temptation on the Panthers’ end to not rush the 22-year-old to the NHL.
